& PRACTICAL HORSEPOWER NUMBERS

WHAT IS DYNO TUNING AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?

A chassis dynamometer measures your vehicle's actual horsepower and torque at the wheels — not estimated, not calculated. Your car or truck sits on the dyno rollers while we read live data across your entire RPM range, then adjust the fuel map and spark timing until your engine is running exactly where it should be.

Most factory tunes are compromises. They're calibrated for average fuel quality, average temperatures, and average driving — not your specific cam, headers, or exhaust setup. After a mod, your engine is often running too lean, too rich, or with timing that's leaving serious power on the table.

We've seen it all — including motors that were 47% lean because of a so-called "self learning" system. Dyno tuning with HPTuners, Holley Terminator, and EFI Live means we can see exactly what's happening inside your engine and fix it properly, with logged data to prove it.

The result? More power, better throttle response, safer air-fuel ratios, and a tune that's built specifically for your build — not a generic file pulled off the internet.

THE PROCESS

No surprises. Here's exactly what happens when you bring your vehicle to BT Speed Shop for a dyno session.

01

BOOK YOUR SESSION

Give us a quick rundown of your vehicle and what mods you're running. We'll let you know which tune tier fits your build and get you on the schedule.

02

DROP IT OFF

Bring your vehicle to the shop in Coleman, WI. Before we strap it to the dyno, your vehicle needs to be in good mechanical shape — no coolant leaks, no exhaust leaks, no oil leaks. Any fluid or exhaust leaks must be resolved prior to your appointment.

Please note: A $500 scatter fee applies to any mechanical failure that results in fluids or debris contacting the dyno. This protects the equipment and keeps costs fair for everyone.

03

DYNO PULLS & CALIBRATIONS

We strap it to the chassis dyno, pull baseline numbers, then work through the fuel map and timing table until the engine is dialed in. This is where the real work happens.

04

REVIEW YOUR NUMBERS

You get a full before-and-after dyno sheet showing your horsepower and torque gains. We walk you through what changed and what to expect on the street.

FAQ

What vehicles can you tune?

Any EFI-equipped vehicle — domestic cars, trucks, SUVs, and engine-swapped builds. We work with HPTuners, Holley Terminator/EFI, and EFI Live, which covers the vast majority of GM, Ford, and Dodge platforms. Carbureted setups can also be dialed in on the dyno. Not sure if your vehicle qualifies? Just call and ask.

How long does a session take?

An EFI tune on a bolt-on vehicle typically takes 6–8 hours. More complex builds — cam swaps, LS swaps, or forced induction setups — can take a full day or require multiple sessions. We will give you a realistic time estimate when you call to book.

Do I need to have mods installed before I get tuned?

Not necessarily. We can handle the installation here at the shop, which actually works in your favor — if you want a true before-and-after power comparison, we'll baseline your vehicle first, install the parts, then tune it and put it back on the dyno. That way you can see exactly what your cam, headers, or intake actually added to the number. If you already have parts installed, we can work with that too. Either way, reach out and we'll figure out the best approach for your build.

Can you fix a bad tune someone else did?

Absolutely, and we do it more than you'd think. We've pulled fuel maps that were 47% lean, timing tables that should've grenaded the motor, and spark knock so bad it's a miracle the engine survived. When you bring it in, we pull the existing tune, show you exactly what's wrong, and build a proper one from scratch on our chassis dyno. Not a base map with a few tweaks — a full custom calibration built around your specific engine, parts, and goals. Every table gets attention, every pull gets reviewed, and we don't call it done until the numbers back it up. If something feels off, bring it in.

What's the difference between a street tune and a full custom tune?

A street tune works with your existing base tune — adjusting fuel and timing for your specific bolt-ons. A full custom tune builds the calibration from scratch and is required for cam swaps, engine swaps, or any setup where the factory base tune is too far off to work from. If you've done major engine work, you need a full custom tune.

What should I do before my appointment?

Make sure your vehicle is in solid mechanical shape: no coolant leaks, no misfires, fresh plugs, and a healthy battery. A fresh oil change is always a good idea before putting the engine under load. If there's a check engine light on, let Blake know when you call — some codes are fine, others need to be addressed first.
